Element 9 - Fluorine - Science Notes and Projects." Science Notes and Projects. Wordpress, 31 May 2013. Web. 22 Jan. 2015.
Fluorine was discovered by the French chemist, Henri Moissan in 1886. He passed an electric current
through Hydrogen Fluoride (H2F2) and collected the gas produced, Fluorine. Fluorine is hard to store,
because it is the strongest oxidizing element known. Containers made out of steel, copper, or nickel will
deteriorate them. The only containers that can withstand Fluorine, need to be lined with a Fluoride product,
like Teflon. Fluorine is the 13th most abundant element in the Earth’s crust. Fluorine reacts violently when
at room temperature with almost all elements. When Fluorine is mixed with hydrocarbons, Fluorine cracks
the carbon to carbon bonds and strips the hydrogens, leaving Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) and carbon
tetrafluoride (CF3). Water burns in Fluorine to give hydrogen Fluorine and oxygen. Sodium Fluoride (NaF)is
used in drinking water and toothpaste to prevent tooth decay .Polytetrafluoroethylene (-{C2F4}n-)is
commonly known as Teflon. It prevents food from sticking to cooking pans. Chlorofluorocarbons (CClxFx) is
commonly known as Freon. It is used to be used in air conditioners and refrigerators as a coolant.
