"Element 76 - Osmium - Science Notes and Projects." Science Notes and Projects. Wordpress, 31 May 2013. Web. 22 Jan. 2015.
Compounds:
Osmium can bond with twenty seven elements on the periodic
table. The most well known compound is osmium tetroxide.
Abundance (on the earth):
Osmium is found at 0.05 parts per billion in the Earth’s crust.
Uses:
Osmium is commonly alloyed with other metals to make them
harder. Osmium tetroxide is sometimes used to detect
fingerprints. This element is used in your daily life as well.
Osmium is used in ball point pen tips and fountain pen tips. They
use osmium because when you are writing, there is a lot of friction
happening between the pen and the paper therefore the metal
has to be strong enough to withstand this friction. This element
can be found in record player needles and electrical contacts for
the same reason. Osmium tetroxide is often used to stain fatty
tissues for microscope slides. Osmium can be found in most
anything that has to be able to resist frictional wear.
