Selenium

Symbol: Se
Atomic Number: 34
Atomic Mass: 98.96 amu
Protons: 34
Electrons: 34
Energy Levels: 4
Electronegativity: 2.55

Interesting Facts:
Latin Name: Selênê (Moon)
Discoverer: Jons Berzelius
You can get it from: refining of lead, copper, and nickel
When it was discovered: 1817
This uses:  photoelectric cells, TV, and cameras

History:
This element Selenium was discovered in 1817 by a man named Jöns Jacob Berzelius. He had majored in Sulfuric Acid Works. Whenever he had heated this element he thought it was Tellurium at first because it had smelt like radishes, but eventually he knew that this really was a new element. Berzelius found that Selenium had been found in present samples in Tellurium and had finally given the element Selenium its characteristic of smell. Whenever he had put it on his skin it had dissolved and did nothing.

Uses:
One of the biggest uses of Selenium is that it is used in Glass, when they put Selenium in glass it makes a reddish color and it discolors the glass. Also it can be used to reduce the transmission of sunlight in a glass that is architectural. Selenium has a Photoconductive action which means electrical resistance decreases with increased illumination, and has a photovoltaic action which means this converts light to electricity. Selenium can convert to AC electricity to DC electricity. Another way that Selenium is used that it is used with anti-dandruff shampoo, so Selenium is toxic to the scalp with fungus on it.

Abundance:
During the electric refining of copper this produces anode muds, which this is most of the world’s Selenium is found or made.

Interesting Facts:
Approximately 2000 tons of selenium are extracted annually worldwide.
The element has been featured in the films "Ghostbusters" and "Evolution".
