Interesting facts It is in your bloodstream In fireworks and flares Used for medical purposes Leaked into the atmosphere because of the Nuclear bombs that were being dropped and influenced the whole generation You have strontium in your bones To see how old bones are they look at how much strontium are in them In many different types of food History It was originally discovered by an Irish chemist Adair Crawford in 1790 while studying the mineral witherite when he mixed with hydrochloric acid, he sound he found a unknown material and named it strontianite then it was isolated by Sir Humphry Davy in 1808. It is a mixture of a mixture of strontium chloride and mercuric oxide. In the mid 1900’s it’s radioactive isotope was leaked into the atmosphere because of atomic bombs and when it washed out it went into the grass where the cows ate it. As a result the milk the cows gave their milk that was filled with the strontium they ate and that milk influenced babies and caused them have cancer and a bone disorder. Abundance Strontium is in a lot of things like corn and oranges which have small amounts where there are large amounts in cabbage. It is also in things other than food. Aquariums put it in their water to keep it close to the ocean. Deep sea shells have large amounts in their shells. Strangely nobody knows that there are actually 320 milligrams in your blood stream so obviously Strontium isn’t bad for you. How it’s used Strontium is used in color TV television and when combined with Iron used in magnets. It also is used many medical purposes such as pills however is dissipates very quickly. After one day of the pill in your body only 0.003% remains in your body. Many people believe strontium is bad for you but that's not true. If it was bad for you, then they wouldn't put into your body and it wouldn't already be in your body! However, its isotope Strontium-90 is very radioactive and does cause cancer and bone disorder but strontium by itself is completely natural. It is also in fireworks. It reacts with the air and gives off the red light we see. Some people want to ban strontium all together because of the trouble it cost but that’s like blaming both twins when only one has done something bad. Just because Strontium-90 is bad for you doesn’t mean all strontium is bad actually the fact it’s in your blood and use for medical purposes shows it’s not bad for you. Reactivity Strontium is very reactive in air and water but it is not radio active. It makes a red color when it is in air. It’s isotope however Strontium-90 is very radio active and when ingested can cause cancer and bone growth disorder.
